“I can’t imagine my life without the Center,” says Mark Klotsman, via translator. Sitting in a chair at the busy Russian Jewish Cultural Center, Klotsman looks in his element, wearing a jaunty hat, eyes alert. He is 97 years young, and speaks almost no English, despite having lived in the United States since 1996.

Over 500 people recently attended the second annual gala for Women Walking West (W3), the organization founded by George Sehi, Ph.D., in 2015. The mission of the W3 organization is to remove educational barriers facing foreign-born adult women by creating learning communities where financial and educational support are available, and women can achieve their educational dreams.

When the first Queen City Classic Chess Tournament was held in 2002, it attracted 350 students. The numbers grew each subsequent year, sending a clear message: kids craved more chess. In 2013, the Queen City Classic Chess in Schools Program launched, introducing chess to students enrolled in Greater Cincinnati schools. To date, the game of chess is incorporated into more than 40 local schools’ curricula, and the Queen City Classic Chess Tournament draws 700 participants.

According to its mission, “Dublin City Schools provides students with world-class instruction, well-rounded experiences, and believes in continuously improving in everything we do, every day.” 

In 1965, John Senhauser — the founder and driving force behind John Senhauser Architects — moved to Cincinnati to pursue a degree from the University of Cincinnati’s School of Design, Architecture, Art and Planning (DAAP). Eight years later, Senhauser bought his first home in Mt. Adams. And, although the building was in terrible shape when he first bought it, the expansive view looking over all of Northern Kentucky and the bend in the Ohio River have kept him rooted in the same home for over four decades.

Midway through the current school year, and it’s already time to look ahead to next fall when middle-school students must navigate the new world of high school. Lucky for them (and you!), Cincinnati Public Schools (CPS) has a diverse offering of high schools to meet all students’ needs and abilities. Open enrollment for high school is just around the corner, so we took the opportunity to check in with four CPS high schools to find out what makes each of them —  along with their students and staff — unique.
