Grey Midwest

This city has been known as a brand town for decades, but we’ve not been known as an advertising hub,” says Tony Desjardins, managing director for Grey Midwest. A full-service advertising agency, most of Grey Midwest’s efforts currently revolve around developing Cincinnati as a creative destination. “Incredible brands have been born here. We think we can help Cincinnati and the entire Tri-State think about creativity in new, more impactful ways.”

In 2018, Grey Midwest become part of Grey Global, a worldwide advertising agency with offices in 86 countries, but the company has been part of the marketing community in
Cincinnati for 30 years. “We were digital before digital was even a thing,” says Jason Brandt, Grey Midwest’s executive director of client acquisition.

As an award-winning creative agency, Grey Midwest offers services in brand marketing, social media/creative, marketing science/data analytics, commerce and performance marketing. Brandt notes that the company’s performance marketing is a combination of data, media, creative optimization and channel planning. The company is “digital first,” with an emphasis on mobile media. “We create personal experiences that help consumers where they spend most of their time,” says Adam Kahn, Grey Midwest’s chief creative officer.

Grey Midwest prides itself on its culture. “Everyone on our staff has an equal stake in our success,” says Desjardins. The company considers itself “a haven for clients,” opening its doors to client employees and offering collaborative work with its planning and marketing science teams. The company also has production capabilities on site, so ideas can be conceived and created in the same day. Grey Midwest is currently capable of an “agile full cycle” within its four walls. “We have an incredibly open and vital space. We simply want to share it,” Kahn says.

Grey Midwest also notes that its staff makeup is roughly 60 percent female, which the company believes is superior to the numbers of the larger industry. The Cincinnati office is a center of excellence for Grey Global in many categories, including commerce and performance marketing. “Grey Midwest builds brands in a commerce world and exists in the underserved territory between brand building, commerce and shopper marketing,” says Christine McCambridge, Grey Midwest’s executive director of commerce. Some of the company’s more significant clients include Procter & Gamble, Conagra, Essilor, McCormick, and Prasco. Some of Grey Global’s notable clients include Volvo, GSK and Nestlé.

The Cincinnati office is focusing its efforts on advocating for creativity in the Queen City. The company has worked with Cincinnati Shakespeare Company for the last two years and is also working with Source Cincinnati, which is an independent organization created to amplify the Cincinnati story to national media.

To that same end, Brandt notes the importance of Grey Midwest’s partnership with Together Digital Cincinnati — an organization dedicated to accelerating the advancement and growth of women in digital fields, a mission that is very much in line with that of Grey Midwest. “Our partnership is new, but will be groundbreaking,” he says.

For many years, advertising has been more about brands telling vs. showing — or helping — but the landscape is changing. Currently, brands are making efforts to connect with consumers and looking to “improve lives through information, entertainment and utility,” Brandt says. “We think we have a lot to offer the region, and are thrilled and humbled to work with amazing brands, our clients and partners every day.”
